See Wiñay Wayna (Huynay Huayna), Peru

Wiñay Wayna (Huynay Huayna) is an Inca ruin along the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. It is built into a steep hillside overlooking the Urubamba River. The ruins consist of upper and lower house clusters, interconnected by a long, precipitous staircase with accompanying fountain structures, often referred to as "baths." A large area of presumably agricultural terraces lies just north of the house-staircase complex. Above and below the houses the people built areas of agricultural terraces, which are still visible. The stonework is variable in quality, but significant portions are of high quality cut stone assembly. You cannot hike directly toWiñay Wayna from Machu Picchu without getting a permit. You can take a trail that is off the main Inca Trail called theCamino Sagrada trail, also called the Sacred trail, Inca Trail Express, or Little Inka Trail. It goes from km marker 104 on the rail road, thru ChaChabamba to Winay Wayna. This is a spur trail that meets up with the Inca Trail at Winay Wayna, so is not part of the normal Inca trail route so may not be booked up since you would not be camping on the trail and only spending 1 1/2 hours total on the Inca trail portion before getting to the Sun Gate and Machu Pichu. This has several drawbacks: You still have to pay for the train to Km 104, you don’t get to the Sun Gate at sunrise like you would on the normal Inca Trail route, and you get to Machu Pichu late in the day after a long uphill climb so you are tired and don’t have long to tour the ruins (most people just take the bus back down to Aguas Caliente to spend the night and then return in the morning).
