See Inside Australia, Lake Ballard, Western Australia

Lake Ballard is a salt lake about 185km from Kalgoorlie. The last 51 of which are on an unsealed road. Lake Ballard is the site of Antony Gormley's (2002) mesmeric installation "Inside Australia". The work was comissioned to mark the 50th Anniversary Celebrations of the Perth International Arts Festival in 2003. It consists of 51 sculptures, derived from laser scans of the inhabitants of Menzies. The scans, used to map the body in three dimensions produce cross sections which were reduced by two thirds, to create an "insider". The figures are cast in an alloy containing molybdenum, vanadium and titanium, which metals are all found in the Archaean rock of Western Australia. The sculptures are placed on an area of about 10 square km on the lake. It is the most ethereally beautiful and calming landscape into which you are drawn inexorably by the distant figures.
