Iwo Jima Breakwater Ships (Shipwreck Cluster), Iwo Jima, Japan
View Original Description
On the west side of Iwo Jima are a groupd of ships that are made of concrete, a material used for ship building during steel shortages in WWI, and were sunk following WWII to create a breakwater for the island. The goal was to make it easier to get supplies to shore, but it ultimately failed. Some of the ships have moved due to typhoons and rising beach levels caused by volcanic uplift. Now called Shipwreck Cluster.
The water is dangerous in this area due to the sulfur pools.
