A jacquemart (sometimes spelled "Jaquemart") is an automaton, an animated, mechanised figure of a person, usually made from wood or metal, which strikes the hours on a bell with a hammer. Jacquemarts are usually part of clocks or clocktowers, and are often near or at the top of the construction. The figurine is also known as Jack of the Clock or Jack o'Clock. In Brussels city centre the Jacquemart and his bell is a bronze clockwork figure that stands 2.8 meter high and represents a top hat wearing bourgeois from Brussels. The sculpture is by Henri Albada. The bell weighs 1750 kg. Both the bell and the clockwork figure are located at the top of the Mont des Arts carillon. On the star shaped clock, every hour is represented by a painted figurine each of which represents a historical figure from the city of Brussels. In clockwise and chronological order, you will see: a Galois, Godefroid of Bouillon, Jan Van Artvevelde, Philip the Good, Charles Quint, Pierre Paul Rubens, the Count of Egmont, a soldier in 1790, Charlier a la Jambe de Bois, a tam-tam player, a soldier from WWI, and an ordinary worker.
