The northern rātā Karamea Walking Tree is a 32-metre tall tree near Karamea, South Island, New Zealand. It won New Zealand's tree of the year in 2024. Named due to its resemblance to JRR Tolkien’s sentient tree-like Ents. The northern rātā is one of New Zealand’s tallest flowering trees. The species can live for 1,000 years. It is unclear how old the Walking Tree is but its existence was known about as far back as 1875.
