See Katherine Mine Ruins, Arizona

The Katherine Gold Mine was discovered in 1900 and operated intermittently until 1930. So who’s Katherine? She was the sister of one of the mine’s discoverers, and is also the inspiration for the name of the surrounding area and town. In 1919, when Katherine Gold Mining Company took over, the mine began to attract a crowd to Katherine camp. Single miners and married men were lured to the town by the possibility of fortune. As part of the promotion to lure a population, a free town lot was offered to the first couple to have a female baby and name her Katherine. Thank goodness the town wasn’t called Bob! In the 1930s, Katherine boasted of being one the most comfortable camps in the country and included a big boarding house large enough to feed an entire working crew in thirty minutes. Ruins of Katherine camp can be found in the form of concrete piers, stairs and metal stair railings. Nearby: Davis Dam Katherine Landing Lake Mohave Marina
