La Digue's Giant Tortoises, La Digue, Seychelles
View Original Description
La Digue has a significant population of giant tortoises that come from the island Aldabra. The subspecies that lived on La Digue is extinct. These extraordinary reptiles grow up to four feet long, weigh as much as 770 lbs, and some of them are more than 100 years old.
L’Union Estate covers one third of the island. The estate was originally a coconut plantation, but now it is a protected area where you can easily spot both giant tortoise and the sea turtle which come up onto the beaches to nest.
