There is no airstrip on Big Diomede Island planes couldn't land, as there wasn't even a dirt runway, so the they dropped its cargo with a small parachute. On 13 June 1971 a Lisunov Li-2 belonging to the Soviet Border Troops crashed in the centre of the island. All four of the crew members were injured but survived and the green hull remains.
Lisunov Li-2T is a version of the Douglas DC-3 manufactured in the USSR during World War II.
