A Mark IV Female is preserved at Ashford in Kent. This is one of many that were presented for display to towns and cities in Britain after the war; most were scrapped in the 1920s and 1930s.
Dating from 1917, and presented to the people of Ashford on 1st August 1919.
Weight: 26 tons
Length: 26' 5"
Width: 10' 6"
Height: 8' 10"
Road speed 4 m.p.h., with the petrol capacity of 70 gallons giving an operational range of 35 miles.
This 'female' version of the tank was armed with five 308 Lewis machine guns.
Crew of eight: Commander, Driver, two Gearsmen, four Gunners.
The engine was removed to install an electricity substation inside it, which allowed it to remain through World War II since all the other tanks were taken to reuse the metal for the war effort. The electricity substation was then removed a decade or so later to leave an empty interior.
