Visit Merdzan Glava Fortress Ruins, Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina

The Merdžan Glava Fortress was an Austro-Hungarian fortified military post east of Mostar. It was built after the Austro-Hungarian occupation of Bosnia and Herzegovina . Mostar was a rear stronghold and had 19 fortified buildings, the most in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was a belt fortress , one of four built by Austria-Hungary in Bosnia and Herzegovina . The fortress on Merdžan glavi is 802 meters above sea level. At the foot of this fortress, a military camp was built in Opine (Lager Opine) as a logistical base for other fortresses on the hill. Due to the need to access and visit this military station, as well as those on Svetigora (877 m) and Guberača (624 m), but also for the purpose of exploiting timber, Austria-Hungary with its existing expert staff made a way from Mostar along Fortica. They did not engage the local population. It led through Šipovac to Brasin. The branch led to Merdžan Head. It was also used for extracting forest materials from Velež. The road was asphalted after the Second World War, and it is said that it is the merit of Džemal Bijedić.
