See Mètre étalons at Place Vendôme, Paris, France

On the facade of the Ministry of Justice at Place Vendôme is one of the last remaining ‘mètre étalons’ (standard metre bars) that were placed all over Paris more than 200 years ago in an attempt to introduce a new, universal system of measurement. Meter installed by the Convention in 1796. It is one of the two meters (among the 16 originally) still in place in Paris.
