Mitiaro Eels at Te Rotonui Lake, Mitiaro, Cook Islands
View Original Description
The centre of Mitiaro is almost flat, quite swampy and contains two freshwater lakes teeming with eels (Anguilla obscura), which the locals call itiki. Mitiaro eels move in mysterious ways. But whatever the route they take, the itiki elvers return eventually to the twin lakes of Mitiaro to fatten and be harvested for consumption.
