Monument to the First Car in Portugal, Santiago do Cacém, Portugal
View Original Description
Conde d'Avillez received the first imported vehicle in Santiago do Cacém and had an accident on the first trip. The top of the range vehicle reached 20km/h.
Santiago do Cacém has a monument, alluding to the first automobile that arrived in Portugal, in 1895. On Avenida Dom Nuno Álvares Pereira, before reaching the shopping area, you can see a suspended car on a roundabout. The installation depicts a Panhard & Levassor, the model that was the first to circulate in the country. Made of iron, steel and fibers, the sculpture was designed and created by António Caetano.
