Hike to Mushroom House (The Pavilion) in La Jolla, California

The building is commonly known as the "Mushroom House", although the actual name for it is The Pavilion. The house included a 300 foot tramway down a cliff to the guest house and isolated beach only accessible at low tide through rugged rocks. The tram that carried people from the roadside down to the house was eventually taken out of operation, leaving visitors to trek to the house on foot. Although this destination can't be toured, it's still quite an odd sight to see while strolling along the beach. The home was built and designed by Dale Naegle in 1968, for Sam Bell of Bell's Potato Chips. If the tide is low, a 3-mile (4.8 km) walk north from La Jolla Shores beach, past Scripps Pier and the rocky tidepools of Scripps Beach takes visitors to Black’s Beach. The route is blocked at high tides. During low tide, it is also possible to walk from Torrey Pines State beach to Black's Beach. Salk Canyon Road from La Jolla Farms (UCSD). Hike down this steep, 0.5-mile (0.80 km) long, gated, paved road at the southern end of Black’s Beach. The house is south of this road. The clothing-optional portion of the beach begins 0.5-mile (0.80 km) north of this access point.
