Mt. Nachi-san, a generic name for the mountains surrounding Kumano Nachi-taisha Shrine located upstream of the Nachi-gawa River in the southeast of Wakayama (east of Nachi no Otaki), is part of Yoshino-Kumano National Park and contains the 33ha Nachi Primeval Forest. The forest has been revered as a place of asceticism for mountain god worshipers and has been protected since ancient times as a sanctuary, and keeps its primeval nature along with the Nachi waterfall (another UNESCO site).
It's main feature is a mixture of cool region and warm region road-leaf evergreen plants, which are the most typical in this region and keep character of a natural forest. There are many species in this forest and it has rich plant characteristics.
