The Northern Lights appear in many forms: There may be a fleeting streak of spectral light across the night sky or an extended display of dazzling multicolored waves and flashes, ranging in color from green (the most common) to various shades of red, blue and purple. The lights are caused by collisions between charged particles that enter the Earth’s atmosphere and emit flickering light. In between bouts of sky watching, learn more about the science behind them from your expert guide. If you’re lucky enough to catch the mystical light show, spend a few minutes taking photos. Cameras often capture more light and color than the naked eye can see, and the images will no doubt act as a magical reminder of your experience. On the conclusion of the tour, the coach will drop you back to Akureyri.
The Northern Lights are visible from September to April but can only be seen on a clear night, sightings cannot be guaranteed.
