See Northern Lights in Alaska

Northern Alaska is where many Americans head for the chance to see the aurora borealis. Although there is a smaller chance now of experiencing a full-on auroral storm than during solar storm, there will be nightly displays of Northern Lights. The real trick is finding clear skies. Near Fairbanks go to Ski Lands to see the lights. At the top of Cleary summit, overlooking the Poker Flat Research Range, they boast the best view of the dark night sky within a 45 minute drive of Fairbanks. Other good observation places near Fairbanks are Haystack Mountain, Ester, Wickersham, and Murphy Domes. If driving along the Dalton Highway from Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay, the rustic Coldfoot Camp is a prime Northern Lights observing location in the Alaskan Arctic. Another option nearby is the fly-in luxury Iniakuk Wilderness Lodge. When in Anchorage, Alaska in the fall and spring, especially in the dead of winter, to have clear, moonless nights. This create ideal conditions for viewing the northern lights. Find a place away from the city’s lights like Nancy Lake State Recreation Area and Flattop Overlook in Chugach State Park.
