Red-crowned Amazon Parrots (OB & Pt Loma Parrots), San Diego, California
View Original Description
San Diego is home to a population of wild parrots, primarily Red-crowned Amazon parrots, which are not native to the area and likely originated from escaped or released pets. These parrots are most frequently seen in the Point Loma, Ocean Beach (OB) and Coronado, with a flock size often estimated to be between 100 and 350 birds. In OB they are locally as the "O.B. Air Force".
They are here year-round, but you may notice more activity in the spring and summer months due to mating and baby-rearing season. You can best see them in the early mornings and late afternoons when they are most active.
They are known for being very loud, with a distinctive screech or squawk, especially when they are interacting with each other.
They typically nest in date palms and feed on fruits from carob trees and eucalyptus berries.
