See Panama Canal, Panama

The Panama Canal was built essentially as a shortcut from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean eliminating the need for ships to travel around the southern tip of South America, Cape Horn. This was quite an undertaking and took over 30 years to complete. One of the most interesting features of the Panama Canal are the three sets of double locks, which help the ships get through the Canal. At the time the Canal was constructed in the early 1900s this kind of engineering had never been seen before. Even today, it is a site to behold. You can take a tour boat through the Panama Canal, but most of the time will be spent waiting on the boat since it could be hours before you get through. The best way to experience it is at Miraflores Locks. Once there you’ll see a video about the history of the Canal as well as the future expansion plans that are underway to accommodate even bigger ships skyscraper tall cargo. Definitely make your way up to the restaurant after the video and try to get a seat next to the window. There you can dine on the buffet and sip a glass of wine as you watch the boats pass through the canal and see the locks in action.
