See Petrified Logs (East & West), Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada

If you want a glimpse into our planet’s prehistoric past, you might want to go check out the 150 million-year-old petrified logs in Valley of Fire State Park! Part of a forest of ancient pines that grew here during the time of the dinosaurs, these trees have laid around long enough to become fossils. What does that mean? It means that all the organic parts of the tree have been removed by sun, wind, water, and time, and have been completely replaced with minerals. You can see a few of these monuments to time just off the road on an easy 0.3-mile trail. Distance: Easy 0.3 Loop How to Get There: Go through the park’s west entrance after 14.5 miles and drive an additional 1.8 miles to an intersection where Scenic Loop Road (Campground Road) parts to the left. Go the other direction at this intersection and turn right up a gravel trail, following the sign for Petrified Logs. Drive another 0.2 miles to the trailhead at the end of the road.
