Platform Oost Cruqiusweg, Amsterdam, Netherlands
View Original Description
The former Amsterdam cattle market is located on the Cruquiusweg near the Eastern Docklands, in the East district. The old canteen building, some houses and large parts of the surrounding fence, including the large entrance gate, are still on the site.
By the end of the 19th century, the old port of Amsterdam had become too small for the ever-growing ships; moreover, the tracks that go to Central Station (1889) make the ports difficult to reach.
Between 1874 and 1927 all kinds of artificial islands were built in the eastern port area, such as Java Island and KNSM Island. Shipowners set up on this, which provide scheduled services to the Dutch overseas territories and to the United States. The harbor is growing, but since the North Sea Canal was dug in 1876, the eastern harbor has actually been on the wrong side. Nevertheless, growth continues until the Second World War. After that, a port is constructed at Amsterdam-West for container transport. Troop ships still depart from the eastern harbor to go to the police actions, and emigrants leave from here to the United States.
When the KNSM also stopped passenger ships in 1970, there was little activity in the eastern port area. The area is increasingly in decline. From the end of the 1980s, the neighborhood became a residential destination.
