See SS Coldbrook Shipwreck, Middleton Island, Alaska

Laid down in early 1919 at the American International Shipbuilding or 'Hog Island" Shipyard in Philadelphia as Hull 1530, the SS Coldbrook was christened and launched into service on November 24th, 1919. The SS Coldbrook ran grounded off Middleton Island in 1942 after being chased ashore by a Japanese submarine, the captain choosing to beach the ship to save the lives of his crew. The ship could not be salvaged and remained battered in the surf. During the 1964 Alaska earthquake, the ground rose 12 feet (3.7 m), and the Coldbrook was left beached at high-tide and out of the pounding surf. The now 107-year-old rusting hull is home to thousands of nesting seabirds, which are studied by researchers at the Middleton Island Marine Biological Station.
