St. Joseph North Pier Lighthouses, Michigan
View Original Description
The St. Joseph River divides the Michigan towns of Benton Harbor and St. Joseph and empties into southern Lake Michigan. The light on the outer pier was constructed in 1906 and replacing an 1859 lighthouse built on a hill overlooking the river. The inner light was added midway along the pier in 1907, creating a pair of range lights.
During winter and high winds, the waves from Lake Michigan spray high onto the outer lighthouse and when the temperature drops, the water freezes over the lighthouse and forms an incredible ice sculpture. If you can wait until twilight for great views of the lighthouse.
Both pier lights, which are one of the few remaining pier range light systems on the Great Lakes, are still in operation but visitors are not allowed to go inside either of these lights.
