Visit The Old Herring Factory (Djúpavík), Iceland

The Old Herring Factory was founded by Elías Stefánsson in 1917 in the remote village of Djúpavík. Unfortunately, Elías’s fishing business was shut down by the economic downturn that started in 1919. The entrepreneur went bankrupt and was forced to close his company. In 1934, Iceland experienced an economic boom. The new factory opened in 1935, fitted with all the latest modern equipment for processing herring. As a result, a second much larger herring processing plant was constructed in Djúpavík. But by the late 1940s, the herring were all but gone from Húnaflói bay, and the factory folded in 1954. The town of Djúpavík was abandoned by 1968. Djúpavík entails traveling miles away from the nearest town on a bumpy, narrow, winding dirt road through a desolate landscape.
