The Samson Propeller, Ardmore, Ireland
View Original Description
The Samson was a crane ship and was being towed from Liverpool to France, we understand to be decommissioned, when it became detached and drifted. Despite frantic efforts with tugs the crew were unable to control her in the prevailing stormy conditions and she drifted onto the rocks near Ram Head in Ardmore in late December 1987, where it remains firmly fixed to this day.
Local diving enthusiast Pat Waide, went under her and managed to detach the 1.25 tonne cast iron propeller and using air balloons and helped by some colleagues, he managed to float it and tow it to The Boat Cover in Ardmore. John Mansfield loaded it onto a trailer and Gavin Tivy sand-blasted it before project manager, Bernie Stilwell painted it.
