Woman of Tehuantepec Fountain, Balboa Park, San Diego, California
View Original Description
Created for the 1935-36 California Pacific International Exposition, as part of a redesign of the House of Hospitality courtyard by Richard S. Requa. The distinctive fountain features the figure of a seated Mayan woman holding a water jar (or olla) that spills into the basin below. The Indian limestone sculpture, also referred to as La Tehuana, was carved by the internationally renowned local artist Donal Hord, whose public sculptures are found throughout the region.
