Tiananmen Square, Beijing, China
View Original Description
First built in 1651, the historical square has changed and grown over time. In the center of the square is the Monument to the People’s Heroes, which commemorates those who devoted their lives to the Chinese people. It also happens to be the biggest monument in Chinese history standing 10 stories tall. Although, throughout history Tiananmen Square has been a place where political events occurred most people know it as the site where over 400 protesters were killed in June of 1989 during the Tiananmen Square massacre.
There isn’t much to do at Tiananmen Square except to walk inside and get a sense of the history vibrating around the site, so only schedule an hour or two to see it. Tiananmen Square is located across the street from the Forbidden City and you can visit both sites on the same day.
Tiananmen is open to the public each day of the week from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tickets must be booked online through the Weixin (Wechat) Mini Program at least one day before; it is not possible to buy tickets on the day or on-site.
Line 1 of the Beijing Subway has stops at Tiananmen West and Tiananmen East, on each side of Tiananmen.
