Titan II 571-4 Missile Silo Site, Tucson, Arizona
View Original Description
A total of 18 Titan II Missile sites once ringed the city of Tucson and stood in a constant state of readiness as the cold war heated up. The heavily fortified sites were built in the early 1960s and existed until the early 1980's. Most were located in remote out-of-the-way locations that gave little hint of the potential lethality that resided beneath the surface. The site in Green Valley was allowed to remain as a museum, and is annually visited by thousands of tourists. Most were destroyed in various ways and filled with concrete. The photo above is all that remains of site 571-4 which too is filled with concrete. These three partially buried structures were once completely buried, deep in the ground and connected together in the same way as the museum in Green Valley. The metal dome once covered the site's main control center from which launching would have been initiated.
