See World's First Electrically-Lighted Outdoor Christmas Tree, Coronado, California

Hotel Del Coronado has the world's first electrically-lighted outdoor Christmas tree, an Araucaria heterophylla Norfolk Island Pine, still standing. It was unveiled at Hotel del Coronado December 24, 1904. When Hotel del Coronado debuted, it was considered a technological marvel. Electricity was still a novelty in 1888, and The Del was thought to be one of the largest buildings in the country to have been “electrified” (contrary to popular belief, Thomas Edison did not install The Del’s electrical system).
