Ski or Snowboard
Southern California
View Original Description
In the winter the San Bernardino Mountains in Southern California offers skiers and boarders a chance to get on the slopes in Sunny Southern California.
Snow Summit and Bear Mountain are located in Big Bear Lake area and are marketed as dual resorts, both branded under the Big Bear Mountain Resorts name. Both Snow Summit and Bear Mountain lift tickets can be used at either resort, and there is a free shuttle bus service between the Snow Summit and Bear Mountain that allows patrons to easily connect back and forth to ski or snowboard the either two resorts on the same pass.
Snow Summit is one of the larger ski areas in Southern California, and is considered to be one of the most popular ski and snowboard destinations for patrons from around the Los Angeles area. Snow Summit is a mid-sized resort, with a 1,209 ft (369 m) topographic vertical drop, and 240 acres (97 ha) of skiable terrain, all of it covered by snowmaking.
Bear Mountain, formerly Goldmine Mountain was setup as a snowboard-centric to move the majority of snowboarders away from Snow Summit, freeing the latter to become a more family friendly mountain. Bear Mountain is also known as "The Park" because most of the runs contain terrain features. The mountain is home to the only Superpipe in Southern California. Unlike Snow Summit, if there is enough natural snow, the tree runs are open for skiing and snowboarding. Even the "out of bounds" territory off of Chair 8 has been opened after a big snow storm. Bear Mountain consists of three main peaks: Bear Peak, Silver Mountain, and Goldmine Mountain. At 8,805 ft (2,684 m), Bear Peak is Southern California's highest lift-served peak. Bear Mountain relies heavily on snowmaking like most Southern California ski resorts.
Mountain High resort is located along State Route 2 west of Wrightwood, California. Mountain High is the most-visited resort in Southern California. The elevation of the resort is 6,600 feet (2,000 m) to 8,200 feet (2,500 m) for the Mountain High East Resort, 7,000 feet (2,100 m) to 8,000 feet (2,400 m) for the West Resort and 7,200 feet (2,200 m) to 7,800 ft (2,400 m) for the North Resort.
Snow Valley Mountain Resort is a ski resort located on the way up to Big Bear Lake in Running Springs, California. It is the oldest continually operating ski resort in Southern California and is also one of the largest ski resorts in the San Bernardino National Forest.
