Spa at Tabacon Grand Resort La Fortuna, Costa Rica

About a three hour drive from the San Jose International Airport in Costa Rica is the Tabacon Grand Resort and Spa. The resort is at the base of the Arenal volcano and located in the rainforest. The location is not just part of the spa’s appeal, but it’s also a vital part of the experience. The resort takes the “eco” in eco-spa seriously. At the Grand Spa the philosophy centers on relaxing in nature, which is why there are virtually no walls in the spa. Just about everything including treatment rooms and mani/pedi stations is open to the beautiful landscape of the surrounding rainforest. The Tabacon Spa offers services for both men and women with the 11 outdoor bungalows capable of accommodating up two people during treatments. The bungalows lack glass windows and since they are nestled in the rainforest the treatment rooms have an open-air concept so guests can look directly outside and take it the sounds of nature. Each bungalow comes equipped with a thermal spring-fed tub for two. The spa also has an open-air yoga studio and a traditional Temazcal, a sweat bath that’s great for flushing toxins from the body. For a unique experience opt for the Native Ritual led by a local shaman. There are also two hot and one cold mineral spring rivers that flow from the volcano. They are said to have healing powers and guests are encouraged to bask in them before and after treatments. There are many typical treatments such as massage, reflexology, and facials available. However, some of the more interesting therapies are those that take advantage of the natural environment such as the Watsu that combines water and shiatsu in one treatment and the Tabacon, which incorporates stretching, massage, volcanic mud, and concludes with a rinse in a mineral pool.
