Saugerties Light, New York
View Original Description
Near the east coast of the USA visitors will find the only Lighthouse with accommodations along the Hudson River at Saugerties Lighthouse in the state of New York. The light was originally constructed beginning in 1835 and ultimately succeeded by the now shining beacon that was completed in 1869. The Saugerties Lighthouse is a landmark on the Hudson River that stands proudly as a Living Museum and a renowned two room Bed & Breakfast. Visitors will step back in time more than a hundred years while experiencing the charm and rustic simplicity of life in the middle of the iconic Hudson River.
When it was built in 1869, it replaced the earlier 1838 lighthouse. Its Coast Guard service was ended in 1954. It is currently managed by the non-profit Saugerties Lighthouse Conservancy which purchased the lighthouse in 1986 and has restored it. The conservancy manages the nature trail leading to the lighthouse, the B&B and offers public tours.
A small museum displays artifacts of the original lighthouse and the restoration efforts, as well as the history of the Saugerties waterfront.
The US Coast Guard has identified Saugerties Light as one of its Historic Light Stations in New York.
