See Stuðlagil Canyon, Iceland
In Upper Jökuldalur, you will find this exceptionally beautiful waterfall, Stuðlafoss Basalt Column Waterfall, and the Stuðlagil Canyon. Stuðlagil Canyon has one of the biggest and most beautiful basalt columns formation in Iceland.
Once you are on road 923 there are two parking sites to see the canyon.
From the north side of the river, drive about 18 km on road 923 to the farm Grund. There is a viewpoint here and a campsite (no showers, paid toilets).
From the south side of the river, you drive about 14 km on road 923 to the farm Hákonarstaði and turn left at the sign “Klaustursel”. Drive down to the river and park on a parking lot by the bridge. From the parking lot, there is about a 10 km roundtrip hike.
The last and newest parking spot is after crossing the bridge and driving on the signle track road that is not very good. This site is near the Stuðlafoss Waterfall.
