Suggested Itineraries: Family Adventures

Heading out on a desert adventure with kids in tow? Here are some ideas on where to go and what to do to keep the whole family happy. Day 1 - AfternoonTake a stunning drive down Valley of Fire Highway. The main road through Valley of Fire State Park, this highway is paved and easy to drive, giving your family miles of vibrantly colored scenery and photo opportunities. Branch off on a 3-mile loop, Scenic Loop Road, which will take you right past natural attractions like Arch Rock and Beehives, or take the 1.25-mile loop hiking trail to Fire Wave--a stunning sandstone wave formation that your family can marvel at. Wrap up with a picnic break at Seven Sisters picnic area, which offers shade, restrooms and grills. Depending on ages and skill levels, there are tons of hiking trails in Valley of Fire, including some that lead to petroglyphs. Be sure to bring plenty of water, snacks and hats. Day 2 - MorningGet outside and get movin’ on the Historic Railroad trail. This is an easy 3.7-mile hike or bike ride that accommodates strollers and leashed pets. Follow old Hoover Dam construction tracks through several pitch-black railway tunnels, and emerge for panoramic views of Lake Mead, Boulder Basin and Fortification Hill. The Trail is easily accessed near the Alan Bible Visitor Center or via the Hoover Dam parking garage, and is great for any age. Day 2 - AfternoonAfter your hike, head on over to Nevada Southern Railway Museum for trains instead of just tracks! Here, visitors can take rides on and explore historic trains, operate trains, take a ride on a mini train and more. Just check their website for hours and closures due to heat. Or, if one railroad-themed adventure is enough, check out the Hoover Dam Overlook, Visitor Center or Tours instead, which can be accessed from the trail. Just be sure to purchase tickets in advance for tours. Day 2 - EveningEnd the day with a resort room, tent, RV or houseboat at Callville Campground and Marina. This is the wilderness after all! Toast some marshmallows and learn about some of the stories and legends surrounding Lake Mead as you sit together by the campfire. Day 3 - Morning and AfternoonStart the day with breakfast at the Coffee Cup in Boulder City. Featured on Food Network, this award-winning cafe boasts tons of homemade favorites and serves them in a fun atmosphere filled with surfboards and photos. Follow that with a cruise to Hoover Dam on Lake Mead and a stop at the Willow Beach National Fish Hatchery. If relaxation is your goal rather than touring, head to Callville Bay or Boulder Beach in Lake Mead for some time in the water. Just don’t forget to check out Ruben’s Woodcraft and Toys after breakfast for a fun look at some handmade toys and woodworking activities.
