Suggested Itineraries: For History Buffs

Are you ready to get your knowledge on? Lake Mead National Recreation Area and its surroundings are full of incredible history and stories. Enjoy this 36-hours highlight tour! Friday - AfternoonStart your weekend the right way with a beautiful drive to an incredible piece of Native American history. The Valley of Fire State Park not only has striking orange and red Aztec sandstone formations everywhere you look, it is also home to a few extensive petroglyph sites--Atlatl Rock being the easiest to access. Bring a camera and stay ‘til sunset. You won’t regret it! Saturday - Morning The story of St. Thomas is both incredible and sad all at once. In order to build the Hoover Dam, the town was flooded--its inhabitants forced to move. St. Thomas was covered in water until the last several years, when drought raised the ghost town from its watery grave, so that people like you could go check it out. Before you hike out to the town, read these cool stories! Saturday - AfternoonDive deep into the Hoover Dam’s history! Visit the Boulder City/Hoover Dam Museum. At the time, the dam was the largest concrete structure ever built. The effort to build it involved thousands of workers (and the Hoover Dam Mascot), and cost more than one hundred lives. Fascinating from an engineering and an historical perspective, the museum tells the story well. TIP: If you stay at the Boulder Dam Hotel, admission to the museum is free. Saturday - EveningIf you really want to taste and smell the history of this area, stay for one night at the Boulder Dam Hotel. The notorious millionaire mogul, Howard Hughes, stayed here after he nearly died testing a plane over Lake Mead. And, the hotel is reportedly haunted! Sunday - Morning and AfternoonEnjoy a lazy Sunday morning breakfast at the Historic Railroad Trail (it’s included in the price of your room) and then head over for a hike along the Historic Railroad Trail. Finish up with some ice cream or a caramel apple at Grandma Daisy’s Candy Store and Ice Cream Parlor.
