Summit
Huayna Picchu, Peru
View Original Description
Located in Peru, Huayna Picchu is the large mountain that looms over Machu Picchu and is featured in every picture of the site. You can get to Machu Picchu by trekking or taking a train from Cusco, the closest city. While you can visit Machu Picchu and return to the Cusco in a single day, you should plan to spend the night in order to make sure you can climb Huayna Picchu.
Start the day early when climbing to Huayna Picchu since only 400 people can make the climb daily. The climb is on a steep rock staircase, but there are some spots with cables attached to the rock to help visitors get to the top as well as places to stop and check out the view. Although the climb can be quite challenging, it’s well worth it when you get to the top and see the stupendous views.
The “Stairs of death” are a section of stone stairs built by the Incas located near the summit of Huayna Picchu Mountain. These stairs are almost vertical and difficult to climb. Moreover, they are located on the edge of cliff views.
It takes about 2 hours roundtrip to complete.
