Surf
Easter Island (Papa Tangaroa), Chile
View Original Description
Surf the most remotely inhabited island on the planet. Surfing on Easter Island – or Rapa Nui has played just as significant a role in the island’s history.
For low key surfing the shallow bay at Pea Beach near Hangaroa’s town is great. More experienced surfer should try the south side at places like the bays of Paka Ai and Papa Tangaroa.
Papa Tangaroa is considered The Pipeline of Rapa Nui! A powerful wave that could possibly ranks among the most dangerous waves in the world such as Pipeline (Hawaii), Shipsterns Bluff (Tasmania, Australia), Off The Wall (Hawaii), Teahupo'o (Tahiti, PYF) and only a handful of other waves. Papa Tangaroa breaks all year long but the bigger south swells in the winter time can be deadly and really heavy.
The best time of year to surf is during January and February (the island’s winter months). Surfing during high tide is optimial due to the rocks.
