One of the longest left breaks in the world is found in Costa Rica at Pavones where rides lasting as long as 2 to 3 minutes covering a distance of up to a kilometer are commonplace. Sections of the prolific waves are renowned for providing perfect platforms for carving and pumping. International travelers and locals compete elbow to elbow for the best waves on good days at Pavones.
Local surf camp operators can provide lessons as well as tours of some of the other nearby surf spots such as another quality spot, Punta Banco, located just south of Pavones boasting some excellent left and right reef breaks
Fulfilling your dream of surfing at Pavones requires some diligent planning. The area is extremely remote with limited services and only a few places offering lodging in the immediate area. Most fly into Golfito fromSan Jose,Costa Rica where you can rent a car, catch a cab or take the bus for the 2 hour or so ride to Pavones, a beautiful journey crossing a number of rivers, passing teak plantations and lowland rainforests.
