Surf Playa Zicatela (Puerto Escondido), Oaxaca, Mexico

Nicknamed “The Mexican Pipeline”, the breakers at Zicatela Beach in Puerto Escondido draws an international crowd of board surfers and bodyboarders. The beach is the site of international surfing competitions including those of the Summer “X” Games and the QuickSilver Pro “MexPipe Challenge”. The two main waves at Zicatela Beach, a left known as “Far Bar” and right called “Carmelita’s”, maintain heights of 2 to 8 meters throughout the summer. The waves break over a sandy bottom and are best tackled by experienced surfers with the best conditions for producing the prolific barrels found in the morning hours. The town has a reputation for providing inexpensive accommodations, food and drink. A number of surf shops and schools are found in town along with expert repair facilities if the need should arise. A beachside promenade with restaurants, pubs and cafes, shops for board rentals and surf schools is a favorite place for visitors to congregate. Puerto Escondido International Airport is nearby providing daily flights from Oaxaca with the option of traveling to Puerto Escondido by taxi from Huatalco.
