Tamarin Bay, Mauritius
View Original Description
Mauritius is an island nation in the Indian Ocean off the southeast coast of the African continent, 870 kilometers east of Madagascar. The island is surrounded by a coral reef. The Black River terminates at Tamarin Bay where a quaint village with comfortable accommodations, cozy restaurants and lounges supports the tourist industry. Tamarin Bay has the reputation of providing some of the best surfing waves found in the Indian Ocean. Tamarin Bay was the site of the 1970’s era surfing film, “The Forgotten Island of Santosha”, with its own cult-like following.Especially when southeast trade winds are blowing against a big southwest swell, perfectly lined up breakers funnel into the Bay at high speed with rides as long as 100 meters. Typically displaying high, clean left breaking waves, Black Rocks, on the far end of the bay, generates an unforgettable right-hander when Tamarin is maxing out. The sandy bottom at the mouth of the river provides good conditions for the less adventuresome with the more experienced surfers heading out to the reef for more challenging conditions which generally presents fast, hollow waves over a coral reef. A group of dolphins have chosen Tamarin Bay as their habitat and can often be seen sharing waves with the board riders.
Tamarin Bay is best reached through Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport at Plaisance in the southeast corner of the island, the major gateway for travelers coming from abroad. Buses and taxis provide transportation from the airport to Tamarin Bay.
