Surf Cannon Beach, Yakutat Bay & Icy Bay, Alaska

If your willing to handle the brown bears and cold water to surf then Yakutat Bay & Icy Bay in Southeast Alaska is your place to be. Located on the Eastern end of the Gulf of Alaska there are these two bays that can produce great waves when the Aleutian swells are running. Outside magazine Named Yakutat, a town of 680 people northwest of Juneau, as “One of the five best surf towns in America” in their June 2005 issue. The small town of Yakutat has become Alaska’s self-proclaimed surf mecca—referred to locally as “The Far North Shore.” Icy Bay has a long sand spit protruding into the bay with miles of beach on either side. Icy Bay Lodge will take surfers who are willing to make the trip from Yakutat (the lodge is mostly setup for fishing and hunting). Yakutat Bay is a 29-km-wide (18 mi) bay just east of Icy Bay and has produce 20 foot waves. Most surefers arrive in the summer to ride the Southeast coast's of the bays with typical six- to eight-foot waves.
