Swim in Las Grietas, Santa Cruz Island, Galápagos

Las Grietas, which translates literally to mean "the cracks," is a geologic formation unique to volcanic islands and one of the most unique swimming holes in the world. The water in the Las Grietas is really cold and 30 feet deep. Las Grietas is one of the places in the Galapagos that you do not need to have a Naturalist Guide to visit. Take a water taxi Puerto Ayora and then it's about a half hour hike on uneven volcanic rock to get there. Make sure to bring good shoes because of sharp volcanic rocks. Once you arrive look down into a huge crack to see the crystal clear, emerald green water at the bottom. In order to get into the water you have to go down steep steps on dangerous razor rocks. This is a tough walk, but the swimming and diving are worth it! The place is not recommendable for kids since it has difficult access ways.
