On the first Monday of September each year the Waikiki Roughwater Swim is staged offshore one of the most famous beaches in the world. The race is open to swimmers of every age and ability level and includes divisions across a number of age categories in 5 year increments ranging from 5 to 80 plus a special competition category for members of the US Armed Forces as well as a “fin” division. The course covers 3.8 kilometers (2.4 miles) with the starting line in the shadow of Diamond Head at Sans Souci Beach near the famous Outrigger Canoe Club Channel. The course runs across the length of picturesque Waikiki Beach, terminating at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Channel. Conditions that must be anticipated include the possibility for high surf and strong currents.
While the race does have its competitive component attracting highly-trained entrants from all over the world it is also promotes the aspect of fun with as many as one thousand swimmers gathered for the staggered start. Race entries include a commemorative TShirt with significant discounts for early registration and on-line commitments. Race organizers recommend that entrants have the background of a swim of at least 2,000 meters. The Waikiki Roughwater Swim has been held continuously each year since 1970.
