The Whale Shark is the ocean’s gentle giant. Known as the largest fish in the sea these creatures can grow as long as 40 feet (11 meters). The whale sharks in La Paz are often 7-10 meters in length and are usually are found in schools of 3-5 fish. Whale Sharks can live as much as 70 years. There are only four places on the planet whale sharks make predictable appearances at certain times of year. The Sea of Cortez near La Paz, Baja California, Mexico is one of those spots. Giants they are but their diet consists of some of the smallest living things on earth, plankton, which are relatively microscopic in size compared to the massive Whale Sharks. These migratory sharks visit a number of places around the planet where warm water and a temperate climate prevail. The opportunity to don a snorkel and mask with the goal to swim with a Whale Shark is available runs from early winter until late spring, when whale sharks feed in the Sea of Cortez and in the Bay of La Paz in Baja California Sur.
