Orcas, often referred to as “Killer Whales”, are actually members of the dolphin family. These black and white carnivorous creatures are very intelligent with many having been trained to appear in performances at oceanariums around the world. The many Shamus of Sea World fame that perform with such powerful grace are actually Orcas. Orcas can reach 8 meters in length and are prolific eaters.
Excursions to observe Orcas in their native habitat are available throughout the world and popular with marine enthusiasts with the option of actually getting in the water with these magnificent creatures while guided by experienced crews available in at least one location, the coast near Tysfjord, Norway. These adventurous excursions allow the willing enthusiast to enter the water in full wet suit and snorkel (Orcas prefer cold water locations) to observe the Killer Whales as they feed and socialize. Tysford is located in the middle of the country with access by way of fairy and European highway E6. The small airports in Evenes and Narvik are also options for visiting Tysfjord.
