Swim with Turtles on Maui, Hawaii

Green Sea Turtles, or as the Hawaiian’s call them, Honu have made a remarkable comeback since their inclusion on the Endangered Species list due in no small part from the awareness and conservation efforts of the Marine Biology community in Hawaii. While of significant proportions - adults can reach upwards of 400 pounds (180 kg) with shells nearly 4 feet long (1¼ meters) - the magnificent creatures are gentle and seemingly unafraid of humans. Since the turtles are primarily vegetarians there is virtually no risk of humans being confused with their food supply and although they do have bony, serrated jaws bites from the Honu are rare. Professional guides recommend that swimmers, divers and snorkelers wanting to interact with the turtles emulate their peaceful behavior rather than that of their primary predator, the Tiger Shark, by floating calmly in the water when the Honu are nearby rather than trying to rush to meet them. Honu are still highly protected by law in spite of their resurgence and deliberate touching or otherwise harassing the turtles is a criminal offense. Opportunities to swim and snorkel with the magnificent reptiles are available throughout the island of Maui. While excursions with trained guides and marine biologists are among the regular options with visits to appropriately named habitats like “Turtle Town” and “Turtle Arch”, the reality is that the Honu are found almost anywhere there are rocky outcroppings with Black Rock in Kaanapali, Napilli Point and offshore Wailea among the most popular locations. The places where turtles are most reliably found are also among the most prolific locations for coral and reef fish including the iconic Humuhumunukunukuapua’a, Angelfish, Yellow Tang, Moray Eel, Trumpet Fish, Butterfly and Parrot Fish. Your trip of a lifetime to the Hawaiian Island of Maui will be made ever more memorable by including the experience to Swim with Turtles on your list. Your encounter with the venerable Honu that is revered in the Hawaiian culture will be unforgettable.
