Each New Years Day thousands of people across Europe, US and Canada celebrated the arrival of the New Year by jumping into chilly seas, rivers and lakes. Each country has its own name for the event from “Polar Bear Plunges”, “Swims” or “Dips”.
The Coney Island Polar Bear Club is the oldest winter bathing organization in the United States. Every New Year's Day, the Club is joined by participants from around the country - although most hark from New York - who partake in an annual swim. The 2005 event had 300 participants and 6000 onlookers.
The Polar Bear Swim Club in Vancouver Canada has been active since 1920 and typically has 1,000 to 2,000participants.
The “Loony Dook” (rough translations to “lunatic dunk”) in Northland Scotland where participants (many if costumes) dive into the Firth of Forthfreezing waters.
