Sail to Anegada Island, BVI

Anegada Island in the BVI's is surrounded by dangerous reefs that have claimed over 150 vessels. Boats still go aground on the Anegada Reef very often. But in good weather, navigating to Anegada safely is very easy if you know the landmarks on the island. Make sure to get proper charts of the area and it's reefs. One of the reasons why it's so hard is the island is very low and it can’t be seen from the other islands sailers are leaving from, so you are compass sailing for the first 7 or so miles. The North Sound of Virgin Gorda (about 13 miles) and Marina Cay & Leverick Bay (about 17 miles) are the two most common points of departure for Anegada. Use VHF radio channel 16 to communicate with the hotels who can direct the taxi’s. So it’s a good idea to bring your handheld VHF ashore. Be sure to confirm with your charter company before sailing to Anegada since it is off limits for some companies unless you have a professional captain.
