Visit Backcountry Information Center (South Rim), Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

If you wish to camp anywhere in the park, other than in developed campgrounds on the North Rim or the South Rim, you must obtain a permit from the Backcountry Information Center. The Backcountry Information Center is located on the west end of Grand Canyon Village, near Maswik Lodge and Parking Lot D. The Village Route shuttle bus has a designated stop in front of the building as does the early morning Hiker Express Shuttle. A Grand Canyon National Park backcountry permit is required for overnight hiking, overnight horseback riding, overnight cross-country ski trips, off-river overnight hikes by river trip members, overnight camping at rim sites other than developed campgrounds, and overnight camping on the North Rim during the winter season. Backcountry rangers answer information telephone inquiries at (928) 638-7875 from 1:00-5:00 p.m. MST, Monday through Friday, except on federal holidays. This telephone number is for information requests only. A backcountry permit is required for: overnight camping outside of Mather Campground, Desert View Campground, and North Rim Campground overnight camping in all sites at Tuweep Campground overnight camping anywhere on the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park between Nov 1 - May 14 (includes ski-camping) off-river camping by river trip participants overnight camping with private stock outside of Mather Campground or outside of North Rim Campground (May 15 – Oct 31) packrafting, other than that which occurs under a river permit For additional backcountry information visit www.nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/backcountry.htm.
