Bahia, Brazil
View Original Description
The northeastern state of Bahia is probably best known for its capital city of Salvador. The city with its top resorts, beautiful coastline, and unique mix of African and European style is quickly becoming quite the competition to Brazil’s other hot spot – Rio de Janeiro. In addition to pristine beaches, Salvador has plenty of natural swimming pools and a vibrant music scene. Music is always being performed at the beaches under straw sunshades and many think of Salvador as the musical soul of Brazil. The city’s historic district of colonial Pelourinho is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
There are plenty of other places to see while in Bahia including less hectic seaside cities such as Recife, Fortaleza, and Natal. For the ultimate beach experience take a boat or plane to the island ofMorro de Sao Paulo. There are 10 beaches and some great areas for diving and snorkeling. Bahia also has its fair share of historic sites such as the 16th century ruins of the Garcia D’Avila Castle in the fishing village of Praia do Forte. It is the only medieval castle in the Americas. Be sure to check out the marine-turtle sanctuary in the village.
